I was recently implementing structured data markup on one of my sites for the first time, and when I encountered the different colored properties on schema.org I was a little confused. Most of them are red, but a few are blue. What does that mean? There was no explanation on the page, nor could I find an answer in the docs or the FAQ. I couldn’t even find an answer on Google, which is why I decided to write up this quick post.

The answer can be found on the individual property pages. Visit the pages for a few of the blue properties, and you’ll notice a pattern — all of them contain the following text:

This term is in the “new” area - implementation feedback and adoption from applications and websites can help improve our definitions.

So, what is the meaning of the red and blue properties on schema.org?

In short: blue properties are new, while red properties are established.
